Because of this Ridley then moved along with his back catalogue of plays to Methuen Drama, [10] where many of them were republished, but not Krindlekrax. I did find the Elvis character almost overwhelmingly irritating, but like a good pantomime villain it makes for more cheers when things are evened out at the end.

Flowers: A man who always has his pockets full of tissues to help with his hay-fever, which causes him to sneeze at regular intervals. Ruskin stops Elvis' window smashing by bursting his ball and after a long talk, they become friends again. Nothing happens in the first 100 pages except the loving description of the handful of quaint eccentric caricatures that people this story.

Lace: The school teacher who enjoys sucking pencils and gets hysterical whenever William Shakespeare's name is mentioned. Later that night, Ruskin lures the monster out of the sewers, and tames it by throwing Corky's medal in its mouth, banishing it to the sewers forever. My Mum recommended this book to me as she use to read it to her primary class and to my siblings and I at home.

Found it particularly useful with year 3 as they could somewhat relate experiences in the book with their own experiences, and were then able to feel more empathetic towards the characters, particularly Ruskin. A tale of confidence building and friendships and forgiveness and death for all those skinny ginger kids out there trying to work out the world around them. He wants to be the hero of a school play, but everyone criticises him for his appearance and voice, and the role is instead given to Ruskin's window-smashing former friend Elvis Cave. Characters in Philip Ridley’s stories usually have catchphrases, and these can become refrains to be joined in with when the books are read aloud. The kids in my class were very excited when this book was inside the box that arrived from the local library.

Krindlekrax was one of the books featured and appeared alongside such classics as Roald Dahl's Matilda and J. However, the text became out of print due to Ridley leaving Faber and Faber in 2005 as a result of their refusal to publish his controversial stage play for adults Mercury Fur. announced on their Twitter page that 17 of Ridley's plays had been added to their catalogue to purchase performance rights to.

In the lower years it could be used as a whole class story, perhaps reading a chapter at the end of the day before home time. Please consider converting them to full citations to ensure the article remains verifiable and maintains a consistent citation style.

As well as books and plays for adults, Philip has written many other books for children including Krindlekrax (1991), winner of the Smarties Prize and the WH Smith, Mind-Boggling Books Award, Kasper in the Glitter (1994), nominated for the Whitbread Prize, and Scribbleboy (1997), shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal. Mildly creased front endpaper, else near fine, in gilt-lettered green boards; in a very mildly age-toned, otherwise illustrated dust jacket with minor creasing and shelfwear. It was first published in 1991 by Jonathan Cape and republished in 1992 by Red Fox and then again in 2001 by Puffin Books where it is still in print. Ruskin Splinter is not your typical hero for the school play, and his class, including his teacher, knew this.Plenty of tension and suspense throughout with interesting characters who will capture the class' engagement, i have particularly observed in a year 3 class that this book was a highlight of the day and something the looked forward to at the end of the day or before lunchtime.
