Thinning (atrophy) of vaginal tissues after menopause can lead to discomfort, soreness and painful sex. Ninety postmenopausal women attending a gynaecology clinic with symptoms of vaginal atrophy were treated with either a Royal Jelly vaginal cream (15% strength), vaginal oestrogen cream or a non-hormonal lubricant, for three months. The results showed the vaginal Royal Jelly cream was significantly more effective than the vaginal oestrogen cream or lubricant in improving quality of life. Improvements in the quality of the vaginal lining cells were also better than in those receiving the prescribed oestrogen cream. Royal Jelly has am insulin-like action to improve glucose control. This effect on glucose metabolism was tested in 20 healthy volunteers without diabetes, who underwent an oral glucose tolerance test before and after taking 20g of Royal Jelly. An oral glucose tolerance test involves drinking a solution containing a known amount of sugar (usually 50g glucose) and measuring the rise in blood glucose levels over the following 2 hours. The rise in glucose levels was significantly less after taking the Royal Jelly.

These include, among others, a correlation with lowered blood sugar (which has also been correlated with ginseng royal jelly; more on that later). Ginseng has been associated with improving concentration, memory, learning and processing skills. It has been used to treat illnesses like erectile dysfunction, hepatitis C, hypertension (high blood pressure) and symptoms of menopause. Ginseng is, in particular, a great choice if you’d like to boost your immune system. Some people also use it for their cancer or heart disease. However, the link between ginseng and alleviating these conditions and symptoms is not yet supported by science, as not a lot is known about the plant yet. The addition of these two heat-clearing herbs makes the formula much colder, enhancing its ability to clear heat from deficiency of yin. This makes it more useful than the base formula, Liu Wei Di Huang Wan, when deficiency heat is the major symptom as in night sweats, hot flashes, thirst, restlessness, red cheeks, and dark urine. It is very useful in treating the symptoms of menopause, where the deficiency of yin (estrogen) leads to deficiency heat (hot flashes, night sweats, restlessness). It is also effective in treating the same symptoms in people who have developed deficiency heat signs after long-term use of thyroid replacement hormones or lithium.
