Description

You don’t want to let your heating oil level get too low. If you have an older tank there will be sediment and impurities settled at the bottom, if the oil level is low, this sediment will get carried through your fuel line and cause problems to your boiler. Depending on the type of gauge on your tank, reading it is very similar to reading the fuel gauge in your car or reading a thermometer. Some gauges are in the shape of a tube. They have a small piece of plastic inside, known as a float. The float rises and falls up and down in the tube based on the amount of fuel in the tank. When the float is near the top of the tube, the tank is fully or nearly full. When the float is near the bottom of the tube, the tank is approaching empty.

Oil Levels Manually and Fix an Oil Tank Gauge How to Check Oil Levels Manually and Fix an Oil Tank Gauge

Spray the tank cap with lubricant to loosen it. Turn the cap carefully with a wrench to avoid ruining the threads. Use a flashlight to find the end of the old float gauge arm and pull it from the tank with a piece of wire. Then, remove the gauge from the gauge pipe and place the new gauge inside. Re-insert the gauge and gauge pipe into the oil tank and close the lid. You might consider using anti-seize on the threads as you do this to ensure a tighter seal.Once a month, add up each of the four weekly changes. After you have the sum of the four weeks, divide by four to get the monthly average tank volume. The shape of the tank matters — for example, a rectangular tank measures more accurately than a rounded one. Questions like that are common. And you have to know your tank capacity to do the math. But the math is done for you in our Current Oil Amount Measuring Chart and our Current Oil Amount Needed for Max Fill Chart. If you are running out of home heating oil, then you may hear a series of bangs or a much louder roar as the boiler starts. These noises often occur due to the air that is pulled into the fuel line. This air can enter the oil line as fuel levels drop substantially, and this can cause the flame to burn inconsistently. The roaring or banging sounds that you hear occur as the flame builds in strength and forces pressure against the sides of the heater.

Find the number of inches in the left column. The center column shows approx. how much oil remains. The right column shows how much can be added to fill the tank to 90% full. An oil tank gauge can break for many reasons. If oil leaks, the buildup can cause your gauge to stop reading correctly. Older gauges may stop working due to natural rust or corrosion that occurs over time. If your gauge stops working correctly, you must repair or replace it.

How To Measure Your Oil Level

You also want to take a peek at your heating oil level if your heating system suddenly shuts down. Although there are other reasons for a furnace or boiler to power down, being out of fuel is a common one. If you ever spent a cold winters evening worrying that you were going to run out of heating oil you will most definitely appreciate this product. One of the most effective ways to test your gauge is by taking an oil reading the same day you have it filled. Do keep in mind that, when you first refill a tank with oil, the gauge often indicates the tank is only three-quarters of the way full, rather than at full capacity. That’s how to use the chart. Find the right number in the Inches column, and use the center and right columns to show current amount and potential fill amount to bring it to maximum 90% capacity. 550 Gallon Oil Tank Chart
