If you want an engaging and wild story, One Last Secret is for you. A thriller that will keep you guessing, until the very end. One Last Secret by Adele Parks took me on quite a ride. I didn’t know what to expect at any given time, and I like that in a thriller. In fact, I usually don’t like super-gonzo twists, but in this case, the ones that occurred were just plausible enough to keep them from being too over-the-top. Dora was an interesting character, hardened by life but still caring enough to help a friend out – at her own peril. The author carefully chooses when to reveal another piece of Dora’s puzzle so that it coincides with what is occurring in the present narrative. Lies Lies Lies tells the story of a family - Simon, Daisy and their daughter Millie. Falling pregnant with Millie was a struggle for the couple and trying for a second is proving to be just as hard. Attending an IVF appointment changes Simons world and he starts to drink a lot more. Simon becomes increasingly more reliant on alcohol and their marriage starts to feel the strain. But it is one night after a friends party that a horrific incident occurs and both of their lives are shattered. There are many twists and turns in this story and lots of secrets, the relationships in this story are realistically flawed and jaw dropping.

This was fast and fun and easy to read in a single setting as I had a hard time putting it down. I actually liked the narrator, Dora, with alol her inner musings. Sure, some of the crazy stuff that happens in France seemed to stretch my credulity but I just went with it. The climax was a bit surprising and yes, I did hope it would all turn out OK for Dora.Simon is so desperate to have another baby he bullies Daisy into attending an appointment to see if they can conceive again. Combining a whip-smart protagonist, immensely satisfying twists and turns and powerful emotional undercurrents, One Last Secret is a massively readable novel' Karin Slaughter, Girl, Forgotten The other characters in the novel don’t fare much better. Daniel and Evan are the secondary key players and are simply whatever the plot needs them to be. On the plus side, Daniel’s inexplicable and superficial nature is explained toward the end of the text. Evan, however, is simply surreal throughout the novel. We know he adores Dora and that they are emotionally close, but while we are told that over and over we never really see what it is that unites them. Given their relationship is pivotal to the story, not having that crucial information really hampers the narrative.

The only thing that did make me raise my eyebrows a bit was how the subject of withdrawal was handled. Alcohol is a depressant and when someone drinks as much as Simon is and is suddenly forced to quit cold turkey, there is not just a danger of delirium tremens, which he experienced, but also death. It felt negligible on the part of the people responsible for the abrupt quitting to not know that and slowly wean him off of it, as I believe is more typical in situations like these. The twists and turns are cleverly plotted, the characters are superbly written, desperately flawed and not always likeable. It was abrupt but absolutely necessary! I was about to give 2 stars to this book! But last third changed my mind: at least so many of my questions answered even though they were far fetched explanations! This is a story with characters who give out mixed emotions. At times I felt sorry for them and other times I was rooting for them all the way. The characters and storyline were true to life. Readers will either know or be the people this story is all about. (Hopefully not the ending). Obviously there is a lot of lies around this storyline that's also got lots of twists. The only person I felt truly sorry for was Millie. The story is told from Daisy and Simons point of view. I do recommend this book. Why a Booktrail?

A week at a beautiful French chateau should be an easy final job for Dora. She’s smart, stunning and discreet. With a title of Lies, Lies, Lies, it’s clear that there will be secrets galore, some of them close to the surface, just waiting to be discovered, whilst others are deeply buried and closely guarded. Born in a different era, Connie would most likely have been one of the women knitting by the guillotines during the French revolution, she had the stomach for it. She always put curiosity before sentimentality. She collected experiences. When taken as a whole, the storyline isn't all that surprising in the end. I pretty much called everything that was going on. That said, it's still a uniquely told story from an interesting point of view. I don't typically like first person storylines because it's too much "I did this and I did that" rather than letting us in on the action, but in this case it really works. This book started off with a bang! And I was ooh! This is different! And these days different is as rare as a unicorn sighting!

I’m used to walking into rooms and dealing with whoever and whatever I find. Every time I arrive at a hotel or a villa or a party, it’s like the first day in a new office and I don’t know where the photocopier is, but I can never let the client know that. The rather ridiculous plot and foolishly naïve heroine made this a tough read. The writer’s carefully crafted and choreographed twists and turns were wasted on me simply because the storyline seemed so unbelievable that nothing was surprising. It fell short as a mystery as a result.

Well, I really want to scream at Dora as soon as she said yes to Daniel. And when they arrive at the château, she meets with Daniel’s eccentric friends who act like they see an exotic creature as soon as they say hi to her. And one o
