After we were in the church, I mounted all her furniture on the wall, so that she can`t block the door again. But her ultra-religious parents forbid him to come over, lest he discover their shocking secret…The Abomination! SOUTHCOTT- Yesterday a strict religious married couple were arrested after a friend of their daughter reported them to the police, because of beating their daugther and rearing an other child in the cellar like an animal.

I think it’s hard for Martha, but she have to understand that our secret is a terrible secret and that she aren’t allowed to talks with anybody about that. Brilliant, inspired, original and deeply disturbing, Abomination is also a fascinating insight into life in a closed community. Summary: Centres around the protagonist Martha and her parents who are part of a strict religious sect and are harbouring a HUGE secret. Once a week, a small group of us would get together and drink wine, eat cheese and critique one another’s work.Martha is bullied at school because of her clothes and introverted personality, but Scott is also new at this school, and feels sorry for Martha. This is the case of Malka Leifer, a teacher at an ultra-Orthodox Jewish girls’ school in Melbourne, who in 2008 was accused of multiple counts of child abuse.

It’s true that the scandal propelled Ezra’s parents, already less frum and not fully part of the haredi community, to move their son to another school. My colleagues at work are happy, because our boss is happy and haven’t got any problems at home and with his family. This is a tale about self-realisation and self-actualisation, and the journey these young men make through the story is both moving and profound. Also its good as through out the book you get hints what this abomination is so this means you have to piece things together.

It’s a rare novel that can operate in such a grounded realist mode while also possessing a thriller-like tension. I struggled to put the book down as I became emotionally involved with the characters who were flawed humans trying to do their best - I was cheering for them and kept reading to find out what happen to them. The characters needed further developing, and the book needed lengthening to make the plot more plausible. Ezra Steinberg and Yonatan Kaplan are twelve-year-old friends who attend the ultra-Orthodox Yael Academy in Melbourne, Australia. I was surprised by just how dark this book was for a middle grade/YA following 2 twelve year olds, but I was really impressed with it! Things get hairy when Scott decides to push the limits and shows up at her home while her parents are both working.

Whatever my intentions were when writing the book, what the actions and inactions of different characters meant to me, none of that matters now.It quickly transpires that this is not the fault of the child, but the fault of the family, who lead some very strange lives. Abomination' is a terrific read, complex without ever labouring the point, revelatory in its scope and tender at heart.
