Getting to know how your EV charges is important, so you don’t get caught out when on a journey. Once you have determined which electric car charger type you have, you can use this information to your advantage to find faster and more convenient ways to ‘refuel’. At the time of writing (August 2021), interactive charging map Zap Map reports that there are 3,691 rapid charging points in the UK. Nearly all manufacturers now use it on their new models including Hyundai, Kia, BMW, Polestar, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, MG, Jaguar, Mini, Peugeot, Vauxhall / Opel, Citroen, Nissan, and VW. CCS has become the default standard for rapid charging. The automaker ended up launching a CCS adapter for Model S and Model X ownersto be able to use the growing CCS charging station networks.

The thing that is different, however, is the fuel - and that means a new type of fueling connector. EV charging connectors are broadly similar to a petrol hose - they're a pipe the electricity comes down - but there are three distinct types of charger, and they might need an adapter depending on what's fitted on your new electric car.

How do you use a CCS connector?

The charging speed depends on three components - the charging station, which is the source of power, the charging cable and the on-board charger. In this article, we will look at an important part of every charging cable - its connector.

EV Connectors - Type 1, Type 2, CCS, CHAdeMO, ChaoJi

Now Tesla has revealed that it will launch such an adapter, in South Korea at least, during the first half of 2021. China, which has the world's largest electric car fleet, has its own charging connection. This again comes in AC and DC variants, the former with seven pins, and the latter with nine. Its plugs are circular, with a flattened edge, and larger than other types. You'll most likely come across... An ever-growing number of our patrol vans have built-in emergency mobile charging systems capable of giving an out-of-charge electric car enough power to be driven a short distance home, or to a charge point. Our All-Wheels-Up recovery system also allows our patrols to safely rescue electric cars with no need for a flatbed. The European Parliament tried to enforce a directive to make this connector gradually disappear from Europe in favor of CCS. The current wording of this directive states that each fast charging station must have at least a CCS connector. Charging stations can easily have more connectors. However, electric car manufacturers themselves are abandoning CHAdeMO connectors. Currently, only two electric cars with this connector are produced, and one of them, Nissan, is moving to CCS connectors, so it seems that this standard will be common only in Japan and China.Hyundai EV6, Hyundai EV9, Hyundai EV9, Hyundai Ioniq, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Hyundai Ioniq 6, Hyundai Ioniq 7, Hyundai Kona, Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid, Hyundai Tucson Hybrid For North America, select Type 1, CCS Combo 1, Tesla Supercharger, for Europe - Type 2, CCS Combo 2, Japan - CHAdeMO, CHAoJi and finally GB/T and CHAoJi for China. You can also use online apps and search tools to find CCS connectors in your area, which is ideal for planning to get a boost on longer journeys.
