The place is also not specified, but feels very like Britain, with Ben living in what seems like it's probably London, and the Sanctuary being set in the north, probably off the coast of Scotland.

And is Sanctuary Rock truly a second Eden, as the mysterious Sir John claims - or a prospect of hell? Join us here at What We Reading as we put it under the spotlight with our The Sanctuary book review! This is a smoothly written, thought-provoking tale about ageing societies and wealth inequality, with an effective shocker of an ending.

It’s set in the imaginary village of Gyrford, where generations of Smiths have served as farriers, which in this case means not simply shoeing horses, but making iron charms for protection and advising on the best ways of dealing with the “good neighbours”. No Such Thing As A Fish has also led to a spin-off TV series, No Such Thing As The News, and three books co-written with my colleagues on the show - the Book Of The Year 2017-19. Outside novel-writing, I work for the TV show QI, as one of the 'Elves' finding out Quite Interesting facts about everything under the sun. By the Sunday Times-bestselling author of The Last Day, this high-concept thriller will provoke and grip you from the very first page.

A young artist makes his way their to find the woman he loves who has become one of the leading figures there. As Ben begins to find his way around the island, he knows he must also work out - what has made Cara so determined to throw her old life away And is Sanctuary Rock truly another Eden - or a prospect of hell By the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Last Day, this high-concept thriller will intrigue and haunt you as you too work to find out what secret is buried on the island. Ben meets many of the island’s inhabitants, learns many aspects of life there, and sees much that impresses him. Just as she is due to arrive back, however, Ben receives a letter from her telling him she's not coming. The world was constructed well and is incredibly believable, although we had a hard time visualising all the aspects of it in part because of the author’s style of writing. There are also a lot of cases where the author spends a lot of time building the world, describing settings and scenarios, but in a way that is quite hard to visualise for a reader. Set at an indeterminate time in the not-too-distant future in either a dystopia or an Eden, or at times both; the main character Ben spends his time waiting to see his missing fiancee while discovering more about the place he has landed in and its mysterious founder.
