Top of the class (nearly) : Pichon, Liz, author : Free

British author and illustrator Liz Pichon began her career as a graphic design artist creating cover art for a music label. As her art style developed, she began selling prints on a wide range of products. In 2004, she published her first book both written and illustrated herself called Square Eyed Pat. She has since published several other books outside of the Tom Gates series. Pichon has no plans to stop creating Tom Gates books, nor other books! Her latest book outside of the Gates series is called Shoe Wars, published in 2020, and features a large cast of hilarious characters. I like the part "Buster got on a window", "Tom drew a drawing of Mr Fulerman". The author ( Liz Pichon)thinks of things - everybody could laugh at. You don’t actually need to even have read the previous 8 books, because this reads easily by itself (although I WILL be reading the previous 8 books simply because of how amazing this one was). 8-12 year old children will absolutely gobble this up - it’s so easy to digest, with tons of learning opportunities for new words to extend kids’ vocabulary. It was sooo funny. I like funny books it is great. i'm glad I found it. I liked Tom the best because he is really funny. Yes I would definitely recommend it.

Readers are introduced to Tom’s best mate Derek, who is also his neighbour, and band mate in the cool band Dog Zombies! We meet Tom’s grumpy older sister Delia, who is on the receiving end of a lot of Tom’s cheeky and audacious pranks. Not forgetting Tom’s annoying arch enemy - Marcus, who he has to sit next to everyday in class… Tom navigates all the ups and downs of growing up, making friends, getting through school and avoiding as much homework as possible!

Then Derek comes over (he’s in Mrs. Worthington’s class, not mine, because we chat too much). I’ve seen him loads during t he s u mme r. (H i s h a i r h a s grown — h e hasn’t.) I show him my ideas and drawings for a band name. (He likes DOGZOMBIES best . . . me, too.) When Marcus Meldrew barges into our chat. . . . “What’s that?” “Ideas for our band.” “What band?” “Me and Derek are in a band, and we’re thinking of what to call ourselves.” “That’s easy.” “Really?” (Marcus has an idea.) 33 In 2016 Pichon created the "Kids' Tapestry", a children's version of the Bayeux Tapestry, featuring historical events to the mark the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings. My favourite part was when a bully called Buster Jones drew on the teachers pictures and made them look goofy (one was a pirate). My favourite character is Buster because he is always up to mischief or in trouble. So, in this story Tom tried to be a school council and id a very cool design to make people vote for him. He said ,"Monday will be Funday, Tuesday will be you chose day (wear what you want), Wednesday is pen day (doodles and drawings), Thursday is furs day (when you bring in your animals) and Friday will be surprise day (such as extra pudding or much more bigger portions to eat at lunch). And guess what Tom got voted as school council and achieved top marks in his test. W Newhich is a TOM GATES WORLD REC ORD . . . . And this is the R EALLY good bit . . . has just arrived too! I am so pleased to see her after the holidays. I smile in what I think is a nice, friendly cheery way. Amy is not impressed. She looks at me like I’m weird (but I’m not). Me smiling HI, Amy! (This is a bad start to my day.) Th en it g ets worse. . . . 5 Top Of The Class (Nearly) is the ninth Tom Gates book and is a delightful read for younger children. I have never read a Tom Gates book before, but I dived headfirst into book 9, incredibly impressed by the fantastic layout of this book. It’s filled with tons of different fonts and different font sizes, there’s drawings of the characters in various situations and it feels like it’s interactive (even though it isn’t). It’s fully immersive and that’s incredible.
