We're not quite there yet, but have made significant progress compared to when I said to my Play School producers in the early 1980s, 'Why can't we have illustrations with Black, Asian and Chinese characters on the screen? My voyage from Trinidad happened 60 years ago but I remember every detail of it as if it was yesterday. People might think it's easy writing a picture book, but it's not, especially when you've got quite a complicated real life story such as Coming to England. So we're really concerned about making sure that new variants do not come into the UK and that we do have a system that identifies where we have variants of Covid where infection is and we're able to isolate it.For example rain, if its impact could lead to flooding as advised by the Environment Agency, SEPA and Natural Resources Wales flood warnings, or snow. Floella was a hard working person who was brave enough to travel across time zones, spending fifteen days on a boat, whilst doing a handful of chores. The story tells us about the author, Floella Benjamin’s troubles, as she perseveres and one day meets the Queen.

I thought she would meet the Queen one day but I would have liked an extra page in the book to explain how this happened. Even though it did not hide from the depressing subject of Racism, I was cheered up by the optimistic ending and would like to read more by this author.

When you first wrote Coming to England did you think of writing a picture book, as this was the age of children to whom you devoted the early part of your career? The book told me about the British Empire and about why people came to England from the other side of the world. If you began your journey in Ukraine, you do not need to complete a passenger locator form, or take a COVID-19 test before travel to England or on arrival.
When you have that personal experience, it's great to get an opportunity to share it with society through a book and make a difference.
