Description

Useful easy practice sentences followed by unseen passages which become progressively longer and more challenging as the students progress.

Am not sure about all the negative things said about this seller by other people,,, because my experience was completely different, totally positive. Grammatical explanations are a sort of updated (but not updated enough) Kennedy - still a little prolix (what's with the notes-within-notes in 8pt?

The manuscript tradition shows that Cicero used both the subjunctive and indicative, seemingly indiscriminately, in indirect questions; but the grammarians — or some of them: they often could not agree, sometimes with themselves even — knew better than Cicero (how ironic is that?

Taylor is a firm believer in the value of English-Latin translation: “Translating into Latin may seem difficult at first, but it is the best way to get to know the language properly and to test your understanding of it. I thought that I understood what contribution Latin made to English, but re-visiting the subject through this book has enhanced my appreciation of the part that it has played in modern culture, etc. The changes are even more profound once the book moves from grammar to reading, to reflect the changes in the A level specification. Although designed as a continuation of Latin to GCSE , it is self-contained and can be used independently. And, as I said, this course would not help them directly to prepare for half of the examination requirements; for that a different sort of book would be needed. Finally there is a reference section including a summary of all constructions, a comprehensive grammar, and a vocabulary of 1000 Latin words (with an additional list of 250 common poetic words for verse passages). The Section B (Cicero) passages, divided into (i) lightly adapted passages (5) and (ii) shorter unadapted extracts (10), have only 5-7 lines of Latin. It is amusing to translate a sentence to find it means something along the lines of 'If you had learnt the words this would be easy, children' or 'Surely you do not find this work difficult?

is a series of five longer Readings, the longest amounting to 81 lines: Nepos on Alcibiades, Curtius on Alexander and Porus, Livy on Horatius and Scaevola (two separate shorter passages), Cicero”s Tusculans on the fear of death, and Tacitus on the fire of Rome. Ialsoamlearning-withtwootherseniorladies,allinour70s,andwearenowstrugglingalone,havinglostourlovelyteachertoforeignfields. Excellently presented, good explanations of principles of grammar, followed by well set-out exercises and passages of Latin prose for translation. Finally there is a reference section including a summary of all constructions, a comprehensive grammar, and a general vocabulary of about 1200 Latin words. The Used, Rental and eBook copies of this book are not guaranteed to include any supplemental materials.

It indicates purpose or fitness (the latter was perhaps its original meaning) in certain uses of gerundival attraction, e. A full grammar section with sentences is followed by many brief, annotated prose passages (Nepos, Livy, Cicero), then a guide to scansion and poetic vocabulary section is followed by a good dose of Ovid, rounded off my lengthier passages from De Bello Gallico and some of the more famous excerpts from Livy. The next sections provide translation and comprehension passages at AS and A-level, including verse unseens, scansion, and a list of 300 common poetic words.
