If you're painting onto wood you'll need to brush in the direction of the wood grain. 3 coats will give you the best colour and protection and make sure you sand down between the second and third coat if you're painting a smooth surface. Terracotta pots and other surfaces may need a good sanding / wire-brushing as they are often treated or glazed to protect them from rain and frost damage. These treatments will reduce adhesion of the paint to the surface. Weathered terracotta needs to be water-bead tested. If the water beads on the surface, sanding will be required to remove the surface coating before painting. If the water soaks in to the Terracotta, then the paint can be applied directly.
