Description

The Manthorpe Felt Lap Vent is a refurbishment product designed to increase the amount of ventilation into existing roof spaces. Usually fitted retrospectively to properties with additional loft insulation recently installed, the Felt Lap Vent will help to combat the problem of condensation build-up in any roof space with a lapped felt/membrane construction. If fascia vents enter at the roof’s lowest point, then abutments can enter at one of their highest – they can be placed where a pitched roof meets a flat wall. Abutment vents are rolled-out material that allows some air to enter and exit, and are installed and then covered in lead flashing. At ERoofing, we sell the Manthorpe Flash Vent. You should ensure that the opening of felt laps on the property will not adversely increase the wind uplift load on the tiles/slates or the driving rain resistance of the roof, for more information see BS 5534:2003, 5.8.1 & 6.2.1.1. Roof FeltVent Key Information Easy to fit and install with a tapered lead-in that aids in smoothly slotting between the felt laps, these felt lap vents from Manthorpe are refurbishment products that increase ventilation in your existing roof spaces.

With three felt clips that secure the vents in place, regardless of whether felt edges are jagged or deteriorated, these vents are often fitted retrospectively to buildings where extra loft insulation has recently been installed. Though, they can also reduce condensation build-up in any roof space that features a lapped felt/membrane structure. Features & Benefits: Manthorpe Felt Lap Vent (Box of 50) Works hand in hand with existing vent products to enhance ventilation throughout the roof space and combat condensation issues A felt lap vent will not meet the requirements for roof space ventilation on its own. The felt lap vent only provides airflow through the vent flaps and will need to be paired with another kind of roofing ventilation to ensure your roof space is fully ventilated. The key with abutment vents is that there needs to be a gap between the nearest batten and the flat wall. – 10mm for the Manthorpe vent though this can vary. The roofing felt needs to be draped around the battens so that the 10mm gap is clear. After this, the top layer of tiles needs to be placed so the abutment vent can be installed.

Felt Lap Vent Installation

Roof ventilation has always been critical in letting a house or building ’breathe’ and ensure that roof spaces don’t gather moisture and condensation with unpleasant and possibly costly consequences. However, in modern houses with more efficient central heating systems and highly effective insulation methods, temperature differences created between living and roof spaces can present significant roof and eaves ventilation challenges. Drawn to colder roof spaces by convection, condensed water vapour can lead to rotting timbers, rusted metal fixtures and felt damage from mould growth. The product has been designed as a remedial solution to help overcome the build-up of condensation in the roof space, however like all products that open the felt lap to provide ventilation it does not meet the code of practice BS 5534:2014+A2:2018 6.2.1.1. The specifier or user should be aware that the opening of felt laps on the roof may adversely affect the driving rain resistance of the slates, tiles or shingles, as well as increase the wind uplift forces acting on them. There are many products available to help you stop loft condensation, and most of them are inexpensive. Remember that they require a lot more work to fit, and work is often undertaken on the outside of the building. Here is an overview of 3 other roof vents that may help you: Roof Vents It’s easy to ignore condensation in the loft or attic. Most people only visit their attic once or twice a year. The weeks running up to and following Christmas is one example as many people visit their lofts to bring Christmas decorations down from storage. Selecting the amount of airflow, then dividing the roof length by the spacing (in meters) indicated below. Free Flowing Airflow Attic or loft condensation is normally spotted either in the winter months or after installing new loft insulation. All homes generate moisture from everyday activities like cooking and showering. When this moisture condenses in a cold loft it can eventually lead to costly problems like rotten roof timber. For more information read our guide on condensation. The EasyVent is both innovative, inexpensive and inconspicuous. Just like Manthorpe vents, they are installed on the inside of the roof, in between the overlap and underlap of the felt lining or membrane. Manthorpe felt lap vents provides an effective solution to increasing the amount of free air ventilation to your roof space and thus preventing condensation. Typically retro-fitted in older refurbished properties that may not have an effective roof ventilation system or tile vents installed, and which may have had additional loft insulation. The Felt Lap Vent helps to combat the problem of condensation build up due to warm air in any attic or loft with a lapped felt/membrane construction, by increasing ventilation. Please ensure that you work safely at all times and get advice or help from a professional trades person if you are unsure. Felt Lap Vent InstallationThe gap between a house’s roof and a house’s ceiling is called the roof void. In most houses, this is the loft or the attic. In houses with flat roofs, there is no roof void and roof vents are not needed. The position of the roof void means that it needs ventilation to prevent condensation. Without this, the rot will begin to set in in the timbers of the roof and spread to the rest of the house. Each EasyVent Loft Vent comes with a spring attachment that you position inside the vent before installation to create an airflow outlet. This allows warm, moisture-rich air to escape through the roof and instantly helps to stop condensation in lofts. It’s such a simple solution, but it works. Commonly found in bathrooms after a long hot shower, or kitchens after boiling the kettle, condensation is a daily occurrence in most homes. In some instances, it doesn’t cause any issues at all. But if it is left to build up in your attic or loft, it could lead to both serious health problems and structural damage.
